Birmingham v MAN CITY – THE PREVIEW: Teamnews and Prediction

2 Feb

After a pulsating FA Cup tie against Notts County, attention turns back to the Premier League and a potentially tricky away trip to face Birmingham. In previous years, a visit to St Andrews would have been accompanied by low expectations, but with Birmingham’s fortress conquered this season, City fans should be confident of returning to Manchester with the spoils. However, we must not be complacent as the home side have a more than acceptable record against us recently.

Birmingham will be full of confidence, having secured their place in the Carling Cup final with a superb fightback against West Ham, whilst they also came from behind to record a victory over Coventry in the FA Cup at the weekend. They strengthened their squad on transfer deadline day with the mercurial Obafemi Martins (him of the brilliant celebrations), a player Roberto Mancini knows well having managed him at Inter Milan, whilst they rejected any of City’s advances for their Swedish winger, Seb Larsson.

Mancini will make a number of changes from the side which faced Notts County at the weekend, with the likes of Kompany, de Jong, Tévez and Kolarov sure to return. The Italian is still devoid of the services of Mario Balotelli and Adam Johnson, the latter of whom is likely to be out for up to three months. Micah Richards, the standout performer on Sunday, picked up am injury towards the end of that game and will require a fitness test before this match.

This is the side Mancini may select:

Richards/Boateng           K. Touré               Kompany              Kolarov

                                                 de Jong                   Barry
                                                                 Y. Touré

                       Silva                                                               Tévez

Subs: Given. Zabaleta, Lescott, Vieira, Milner, Jo, Guidetti

The home side, despite their excellent form in cup competitions, are struggling in the league and currently languish just outside the relegation zone. Their lack of goals seems to be the main problem, as the likes of Matt Derbyshire and Cameron Jerome have failed to hit the heights expected. However, in Serbian striker Nikola Žigić, whose name is a nightmare to type, they possess a potent target man. His aerial ability is indubitable and he has started finding the net, most notably the winning goal against West Ham.

Referee: Kevin Friend – I’m not a huge fan of the Leicestershire based official who is all too ready to book players for the most inoffensive of fouls. He’s relatively new to refereeing in this league so let’s hope he a friend and not a foe tonight!

Prediction: Birmingham 0 – 2 MAN CITY – If we start well and score the early goal, then I can see us winning comfortably. Let’s hope it’s a better end result than our last visit to the Midlands! Goals to be scored by Carlos Tévez and Edin Džeko.

RB depends on Richards’s fitness. If he’s fit, he plays. If not, which is likely, then it’s either Boateng or Zabaleta.
