Birmingham 2 – 2 MAN CITY – PLAYER RATINGS

3 Feb

Hart – Wasnt shielded by his defence for the Birmingham goal but was generally assured under the barrage of long balls. Distribution was better than in recent matches too – 6

Richards – Along with those at the ground, those watching or listening elsewhere and the players, I was hugely concerned for his wellbeing after the clash of heads with de Jong. Fortunately, it doesn’t look as bad as first feared, with it being revealed on Twitter that he didn’t go to hospital and was seen chatting around the squad after the game. Let’s hope he back to full health soon – 6

Boateng – When the team was announced, I was thrilled that he would partner Kompany in central defence. It’s Boateng’s favoured position and he has looked assured there for us. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see the partnership blossom due to Micah’s injury. Boateng was less impressive at right-back, often cutting back onto his left foot and wasting good opportunities. I hope Mancini keeps him in the centre though – 6

Kompany – I dread to think where we would be without him. Yet again, a rock at the heart of defence, winning his battles with Cameron Jerome and Nikola Žigić. Brought the ball forward well on a couple of occasions too – 8

Kolarov – Scored one majestic goal and came within a coat of point to winning the game with another sweetly struck free-kick. Offers us a genuine goalscoring set-piece threat and was promising in his attacking play tonight. Improved defensively from recent showings as well – 7.5

Milner – Was impressive in the opening stages, as he linked the midfield and attack very well. Dropped deeper as the match went on however, and struggled in the second half. Good workrate and attitude thought, but lacks the skill of others around him – 6.5

De Jong – Absence makes the heart grow fonder. His injury, picked up in the clash with Micah, forced him off at half-time and the second period highlighted just how important he is to our team. Without him, we couldn’t keep possession and were swamped in midfield. We need him fit as soon as possible – 7

Barry – Started very brightly in the first half but faded like the rest of the team. Was blowing heavily by the final stages and could do with a rest at the weekend. However, we don’t have the strength in depth to allow that – 6

Silva – Our brightest attacking option and the one player who looked as if he may conjure up a moment of brilliance. Hurried about, but his final touch was often lacking. Still getting upto speed after his two week layoff – 7

Tévez – Worked harder than anyone and tries to lead by example, but that sometimes means he’s far too greedy. Scored a scrappy opener, but could have released Boateng a few times on the right, when instead he took the ball on himself – 6.5

Džeko – Should have been confident after goal against Notts County but really struggled to impose himself on the game. Failed to hold the ball up well enough to bring others into play, but given time, he will be fine. Don’t get on his back – 5

K. Touré – Replaced Richards midway through the first half and coped OK with the physical threat of Jerome. Slightly unsure of his footing at times, but was solid enough – 6

Vieira – Such a shame to see a fantastic player fade so rapidly. A great at Arsenal but he’s doing his reputation every harm on the pitch at City. Very clumsy challenge to concede the penalty and was a couple of yards off the pace in the second half. Great for his experience in the dressing room, but maybe that’s where he should stay – 4

Vieira was definitely the reason we lost. He has nothing to provide on the field anymore. Ibrahim seems more of an acceptable option and should be back soon from Scunthorpe. Boateng should stay at center back as he seems to be stronger in the air than Kolo and not as mistake prone as Lescott. While Zabaleta should be at right back until Micah gets back, however long that is. I don’t know if anyone else noticed but we seemed to put the ball in the air way too often. Even if the pitch was in dire conditions, it seemed as if the better option was to keep it on the deck and not lose possession as often as we did.

    Steven, read the title…
Pretty sure it was 2-2 fella; schoolboy error.

View From A Blue: Corrected now, thanks!

Again you are far too forgiving of Hart. He has an immense talent but his nerves are really plagueing him in recent games. As you point out this game showed us just how influental De jong is to the side.
And can anyone comment upon what level of involvement Gai assulin is going to have at city. I would personally like to see him get some first team opportunites.

He’s only played 20 minutes for the EDS side, so is nowhere near match fit, but I think we all have high hopes for him!

  4. Kaptain Kompany 03/02/2011 at 9:43 pm #

We need Boateng or Richards to be playing Center Back next to Kompany.
And Viera is completwly worthless, we should never play him again for the rest of his life

  5. ALEKSANDER KOLAROV IS MY HERO!!! 04/02/2011 at 11:30 am #

Love the start of De Jongs….absence makes the heart grow fonder! Thats brilliant and very appropriate

Type though in the Vieira bit…”Such a shame to see a fantastic player fade TO rapidly”…everyone is very harsh on him though as he played well against County?
