13 Feb

Hart – Made one good stop from a Fletcher header and his command of the box was generally sound. Helpless for both goals – 6

Richards – If only he could play like this more often! When we lost 3-0 at home to Arsenal, I singled him out then for his drive, desire and determined approach and he replicated that showing again here. Full of pace and power, he was a threat all game, constantly providing an outlet down the right. Better defensively against Giggs than in recent derbies – 8

Kompany – Outstanding and my man of the match. I dread to think where we would have been this season without him. I say it virtually every game, but he was an absolute rock at the back. Picked up an early booking which meant that one mistimed tackle would have seen him leave, but from then on, his display was nothing short of magnificent. The best centre back in the Premier League this season without a doubt – 9

Lescott – When he was named in the side, I, along with many others, resigned myself to defeat. Normally such a liability, I felt that Rooney would walk all over him. However, he wasn’t too bad. Won most of the aerial challenges, although he still looks scared of the ball – 7

Zabaleta – At fault for the first goal when he should have been tighter to Nani as opposed to let the ball run across him. Was given a tough afternoon by the Portuguese winger, but to be fair, he wasn’t given a great amount of help by Kolarov. Not as effective offensively as usual – 5

Milner – As per normal. Full of energy and desire and helped us to dominate in the first half. Deployed in a fairly deep role but his interchange of passing with the likes of Yaya and Barry was very effective. Substituted early in the second half – 6

Y. Touré – I’ve criticised him heavily on here before but I’m glad that today I’m able to praise him. He worked as hard as I’ve seen him work in the first half and although he faded slightly towards the end, he put in a good shift, one that should be produced every week, not just for one game. Looked bright in attack and closed down well in midfield – 8

Barry – Worked his socks off and had another impressive game in the centre of the park. Passing was good (48 out of 56) but it was the way he controlled the first half that pleased me the most. Will most likely take a deserved break on Tuesday in the Europa League – 7

Kolarov – So effective against West Brom on the left of midfield but totally out of the game  on Saturday. Looked off the pace, and failed to supply any decent crosses into the box, or indeed, help out Zabaleta – 5

Silva – An absolute joy to watch. Controlled the game with his incisive passing and movement. Should have buried his chance in the third minute and we regret that missed opportunity now, but as recognised by pundits and fans alike, he was the man of the match, along with Kompany – 9

Tévez – Not the way he would have liked to to have returned but he was up against a solid-ish United defence. Worked as hard as anyone and looked bright in his exchanges with Silva, but not quite the end product. He’ll be fine though – 6

SWP – Struggled to adapt to the frenetic pace of the game at first but it was his cross that lead to our goal. Looked bright enough towards the end and he should start against Aris on Tuesday – 6.5

Džeko – Gave the attack a focal point. Thought he scored, only for replays to show it came off Silva, and on one occasion, his first touch let him down. But it was a good cameo and he too will start in midweek – 6.5

I agree with most ratings. Zabaletta and Kolarov were especially disappointing, but I thought Zabaletta was just overmatched and I was surprised he didn’t come off first and allow Barry or Kolarov to move back to LB. To me, it seems Richards should be first choice RB now. I thought SWP was pretty good considering his lack of pitch time lately, I think you overrated Barry a little too. He’s always a step slow, does not make any incisive passes, he completes a lot of easy ones, but is never a part of an attacking move. And I love Kompany more than anyone, but he did not have his best game, the early card was senseless and handcuffed him the rest of the game. He was woefully out position on the first goal and failed to react for the second. With that said, he was brilliant besides those moments, but you can’t just forget about the mistakes. Dzeko was definitely off the pace and a couple good first touches might have created 2 or 3 more chances. I thought City played well and positively, a finish from Silva or a moment of class from Tevez and we could have got 3….and I refuse ro comment on how brilliant Shrek’s goal was, I refuse.

  2. CanTheyScore 13/02/2011 at 6:27 pm #

Lescott did loose one key aerial battle though…

  3. Plattsy 13/02/2011 at 6:28 pm #

I agree on the whole but Milner doesn’t deserve 6, I didn’t even know he was on the pitch for the first half an hour – he didn’t add anything to our play in my opinion.
I thought Barry and Lescott, both players whom I usually have reservations about, both deserve more than 7 as well. I thought they were exceptional.

  4. rat 13/02/2011 at 6:29 pm #

All played decent, just in the end were unlucky

  5. Roman Stus 13/02/2011 at 6:54 pm #

Agree with your ratings although disagree with MIke G.
Nanis cross for Shreks goal was deflected off Zabalettas back which changed the trajectory of the ball. This in turn flatfooted Kompany and Hart. Therefore he was not at fault for the goal and in my opinion was the man of the match.

  6. mattbw7 13/02/2011 at 7:06 pm #

VDS 9 didn’t flap, stopped Tevez effort which was offside.

O shea 7 did ok dealt with most threats.

Smalling 8 what a game to have to step into.

Vidic 8 His usual no nonsense self.

Evra 7 Was suspect at times but that was more to do with YA Ya and Silva being so good.

    Ando 7 Dug in
Scholes 7 67 years old nuff said
    Giggs 7 70 years old!!!!
Nani 9 1 goal 1 assist, most threatening player.

Rooney 10 never stopped fighting and that goal! see what your missing!!!

  7. mikeG 13/02/2011 at 7:17 pm #

You’re right Roman, maybe I was a little harsh on the second, it still hurts too much, but the card was undisciplined and I have no clue where he was playing on the first goal, he wasn’t even in the picture on the flick on. Don’t get me wrong, I love Vinny, maybe he was over compensating with Lescott.

  8. Ricky 13/02/2011 at 7:25 pm #

    @ mattbw7

Not being picky, but i’d question a few of your ratings there.

VDS 9?? Did he have anything to do? No. Did he do anything wrong? No. Deserves the same as Hart then. 6 is the standard rating.
O Shea – I thought he was poor. He dived into too many challenges and did not much else.
Evra – “suspect” to use your own words. His job was to contain one of (Ya)^2 or Silva and he did neither. Not deserving of a 7.
And, to top it all off….
He had a shocking game, didn’t look like he wanted to be there most of the time and, even though he scored a spectacular goal, that was it. Actually, what am i on about, a performance deserving of much more than a 10!!

  9. mattbw7 13/02/2011 at 8:08 pm #

some of it tongue in cheek Ricky, guess which?

  10. Amman Kallumpram 13/02/2011 at 8:15 pm #

I agree with your ratings apart from Richards who I would have given 7, maybe 7.5 if I was being generous. He did better against Giggs than he usually does, yet getting skinned at least 4 times by a 37 year old, is not really acceptable.
How many times do I have to say this….Kompany is the 2nd best defender in the league…..Vidic is better. I could write an essay on the subject but I have work to do tonight!! Kompany is still world class, but 2nd to Vidic.

    United ratings for me:
VDS – 6.5 – Had nothing to do most of the time but made himself look big to put Silva off in the one-on-one. Helpless for the goal.

Sheasy – 7.5 – Surprisingly good performance from John, kept it simple and his link-up play with Nani was very good. Was composed and intercepted well. Nullified the threat of Kolarov who was subsequently taken off for his ineffective performance. He even nutmegged one of your players which shocked me(can’t remember who it was)!

Vidic – 8 – Solid, dependable performance from Vida, put his body on the line a couple of times and marked Tevez out of the game. Vocally, you could see he was organising the defence very well and helping Smalling out against the good movement of City.

Smalling – 9 – Brilliant performance from the 20 year old who was playing non-league footy two seasons ago. Was not overawed by the occasion and played confidently, passing well and in a composed manner when hustled and harried by Tevez and co. Won every aerial battle and even made a forward foray on the break, where Giggs should have played him in!

Evra – 6 – Not one of Paddy Evra’s best games as he found the movemnt of Silva and Richards tough to deal with. Should have closed down SWP for City’s goal

Nani – 9 – What a performance by the man in another big game. A fabulous goal where his movement, touch, technique and composure were perfect…Zabaleta wasn’t expecting him to control the ball, but he did. The movement on and off the ball was particularly impressive, at times weaving past 3,4 players, ripping M.O.M Kompany on one occasion. He was our most dangerous player and there was an air of anticipation around the stadium everytime he got the ball, perhaps the sign of a great player? The fact that he is quick, both footed makes him very unique and extremely tough to mark, especially when swapping wings. United’s M.O.M not only this game but across all the season.

Scholes – 7 Kept things solid and was fairly composed, spraying balls out to the wings, as you’d expect from him. Was at times overawed defensively by City’s midfield, but played a lovely pass out to Nani, for Rooney’s goal.

Fletcher – 7 Lost a few midfield battles with Y.Toure which was disappointing, yet kept driving on and made promising late runs into the box. Had a good chance with a header which could have gone in on another day.

Anderson – 6 Not a great game for Ando, as defensively did not cope well enough with City’s midfield. Decent passing forward when he got forward.

Giggs – 7 – A mixed bag for the United legend as he made many passes which went astray, with some of his flicks not coming off, which led to our dispossession. Because of his age, defensively, he let Evra be exposed and outnumbered by SWP and Richards. However, offensively he showed some real quality, twisting and beating Richards on many occasions. The fact that he played 94 mins again at his age to a high level is an achievement in itself and should be applauded. Sublime assist for Nani’s goal.

Rooney – 7 – But for his spectacular goal, I would have given him a 6, because for the majority of the match, he was very isolated and cut a frustrated figure, with many of his passes going astray. This was largely due to a brill performance by Kompany who kept him quiet for the majority of the match. Yet the sign of a special player is that when he is not playing well, he can produce a moment of magic, right out of the top draw. The audacity alone to try something that spectacular is praiseworthy itself; not many players have scored a bicycle kick in such a high pressure match (except for Berba 😀 ). He is starting to improve with his form and look like the Rooney of last season, ominous for the rest of the Prem.

    • Bring Bellamy back 13/02/2011 at 8:38 pm #

Get the boat pal will you. Whatever about Rooney and his soap opera but Nani is an absolute waste! And for anyone who thinks that i am just saying that cause i am biased they can think again. The chap is the biggest diver in the league. Sure he has had moments of beilliance but he has no consistency sbout him at all. And as for your “sign of a great player” remark. You honestly have to be being self depracting. A great player! Are you for real. Herlding Ronaldo as great has a dubious ring about it but his cheap knock off version. No chance. Im sure Nani the unstoppable is really going the to give Messi, Villa,Xavi and co alot to worry about in the CL. And i am well aware that the current City team is not exactly filled with saints either but their nowhwere near as bad as that clown.
Well maybe Jo but thats it!

  11. Amman Kallumpram 13/02/2011 at 8:24 pm #

P.S I would have given Wright Phillips 7.5/8. Really caused us problems when he came on.

  12. Citysince77 13/02/2011 at 9:00 pm #

Silva, Kompany, Richards and Yaya get your highest marks and rightly so. I do think the whole team did their best to get the win, but ultimately, it was the left hand side that let us down. Both Kolarov and Zabaleta had been away on international duty and I think they could have done with working on their new found partnership a bit more. City played really well all in all, I really think we matched them all the way and had looked the more likely team once we had equalised, but it was not to be. I also feel Vidic would have had to perform a ritual killing on Dzeko for him to get booked, I always knew the guy was a dirty t**t and yesterday confirmed that. Not to mention the boots of Evra, Scholes and to a lesser degree Giggs began flying about the place when the tide turned so we definately had them ruffled. At the end of the day we deserved at least a draw, but a goal scored by a man who for pretty much the last year would have skied that, we were beaten. But gone are the days when the season was effectively over once the derbies had been played. We still have the two missions to complete which was the objective all along, Champions League football and possibly a trophy. We are still very much on course for both objectives whatever the armchair manc rags or the day trippers say. After seeing the way they went about the job yesterday I think we will be certain to do one, if not both. CTID

  13. Ricky 13/02/2011 at 9:33 pm #

But Amman, how can your ratings give a true reflection of your views on the game ….. you didn’t see it all

  14. Blue moon 13/02/2011 at 10:11 pm #

With performances like that, how did you lose? Silva as man of match? Dream on for the next 35 years.

  15. Amman Kallumpram 13/02/2011 at 10:47 pm #

Ricky, I watched Football first on Sky sports of the whole game, so my ratings are completely valid….stop trying to invalidate my argument.

My ratings are very fair and I have criticised harshly two of my favourite players….. Anderson and Evra, who both had poor games.

Bring Bellamy Back, your sounding very very bitter. Nani not being consistent??! Are you joking me? He’s top of the assist league by 2 clear assists with 13, and he’s scored 9 goals, meaning he’s directly contributed to 22 of our goals. He’s the best midfielder in the Premier League and the stats prove it! What more do you want him to do? Score a hat-trick with three 40 yard screamers against Chelsea….not gonna happen mate. When I use the term great, I don’t just refer to the top 10 players, I refer to the top 30 in the world, and Nani is certainly in that bracket this season! His goal against you lot was sublime, thats what making you feel bitter.

Can you name me a better Winger in the world atm that can rival Nani ( I’m excluding Ronaldo and Messi from this argument as they’re on a different level). If you say Bale, I will refer to his 3 assists in the league this season.

So what if he dives, I’ve seen Messi dive on many occasions and of course Ronaldo, but they’re the two best players on the planet! Robert Pires, one of Arsenal’s greatest players, was a huge diver. Steven Gerrard is one of the worst offenders yet he is a truly great player (pains me to say it as a United fan).

If Nani performs like this every season, he has the potential to be an Old Trafford great.

By the way, you mentioned how Xavi, Villa and Iniesta would not be worried about Nani….its quite funny that Portugal spanked Spain 4-0 recently, with Spain lining up with the same team that played in the World Cup final. Nani got two assists that game and its quite amusing that Nani was injured during the World Cup and that he was the only player missing for Portugal that differed from their line-up in the WC against Spain.

Please take your blue-tinted glasses off and give Nani an ounce of credit 🙂

    • Bring Bellamy back 13/02/2011 at 11:04 pm #

I have already said that the player in question has abilities. And although his contemptious attitude is unbearable i judge him soley on what i see. And that is that the chap goes missing for alot of games and frankly his behaviour against Spurs in the old trafford leg was beyond grating. As for you and your stats well i dont judge brilliance on whoever happens to be beating city whatever season. If i did i would clammering for city to sign Tim Cahill. As for the ridiculous arguement of Portugul beating Spain. Well i think that was an international freindly and non competetive matches dont mean squat pal. And if they did well then City would be the last “English” team to have beaten Barcalona then thanks to Martin petrov.

  16. Amman Kallumpram 13/02/2011 at 11:00 pm #

PS Ronaldo has scored 50 goals in 51 games for Real, breaking the records of footballing greats such as Raul, Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas! Just because he’s an ex-Red doesn’t mean he’s not a great player! He scored 42 goals as a winger in the toughest league in the world too! In my mind that is more than enough to be regarded as a great.

    • Bring Bellamy back 13/02/2011 at 11:17 pm #

Ronaldo is a clown with no grace about his charachter what so ever. I wanted to throw up when i heard Giggs the “model professional” talk about what a great player he is. The Spanish league is an awful competition. Its a worse standard than the premiership which has slipped dramatically from what it was. The league is in a transition phase and there has been a levelling out which is how United have been sleepwalking their way to the title. And also that might be where your current stat book is coming from.
P.S. Its great seeing Ronaldo at Franco’s facist club after leaving supposedly the last great socalist bastille in the Premiership.

  17. Amman Kallumpram 13/02/2011 at 11:35 pm #

Sounding like City legend Mike bitter Summerbee, who claimed City had 60% possession yesterday and then when Sky Sports showed him that United had more shots on target and 54% possession, he went ‘oh i don’t care about stats’.
Nani goes missing? really? Didn’t go missing against you yesterday, got two assists against Liverpool, scored and assisted against Spurs, got an assist against Arsenal, has scored twice against Bayern last season and got 3 assists against AC Milan.

Good article explaining ‘a masterclass from nani’.

As for players going missing, the player that City favourite Noel Gallagher has described as being ‘City’s best ever player’, Mr Carlos Tevez?
Has gone missing in the last two derbies, barely knew he was playing yesterday! Not everyone can turn up every game, but Nani and Tevez have been the two most consistent players in the league this season.

As for the friendlies mean nothing argument, Spain vs Portugal is like England vs France, huge rivalry with both fans wanting victory badly for bragging rights, even if it is a friendly. For Portugal to spank the World Champions so convincingly, with both sides playing strongest XIs, midseason is no mean feat. With regards to City beating Barca….you were playing in pre-season their reserves plus Puyol and Yaya. No Xavi, Iniesta, Pique,Valdes etc…so I find that a silly argument.

Player’s attitudes? What about one of your own players, Mario Balotelli, who is one of the most arrogant nobheads, saying he’s the 2nd best player in the world after Messi and saying that he will win more Ballon D’ors than Messi in his career!! Absolutely ridiculous! What has Balotelli done to justify all this? All he’s done this season is score a few tap-ins, nothing to brag about really!

    • Bring Bellamy back 14/02/2011 at 12:06 am #

I think all city fans take Mario’s comments in jest. If you watch the interviews with him on the city website you will see that he is often smiling and in fact being quite sarcastic. However, i think he has astonishing ability and has quite a nice swagger about him that reminds me of certain united players actually.
The rivalry between Spain and Portugal still does not equate into a proper competetive match. Spain are the world champions and any football fan knows that are nearly unplayable when they mean business (kinda like the last classico).
Also i feel Tevez should be exempt from certain criticism’s for Satarday’s game due to his personal issues. But he is tremendous.
P.S England and France are shite and Ribbery should be in the nick.

  18. Amman Kallumpram 14/02/2011 at 12:24 am #

When they mean business? Like in the world cup when they lost against Switzerland? Spain are a fabulous team, one of the best ever, yet no team is ‘unplayable’ and exempt from criticism. If they were unplayable they would be easing past the likes of Switzerland and Paraguay with ease, yet they scraped so many 1-0 wins in that tournament, instead of batterings.

Why should Tevez be exempt from criticism for personal reasons????? Rooney has had a lot tougher year and huge amount of bad press, regarding his World Cup performaces, off the field antics and Transfer request saga, yet still manages to produce yesterday and have ten assists to his name in the league, more than Silva and Milner combined?
He was anonymous in both derbies.

You seem to be a keen fan of Bellamy, who despite being a good player, is a thug and should also be in prison, after numerous assaults!

    • View From A Blue 14/02/2011 at 12:37 am #

I’ve kept out of this argument, but Amman’s last comment shows him up for what he is..

To say that Rooney has had a tougher year than Tévez is laughable. Both went to the world cup. Rooney was a disgrace, performing appalingly and then having the temerity to have a go at the fans. Tévez on the other hand, was much better.

Both handed in transfer requests. Both players stayed at the clubs. Rooney got £50,000 more per week. Tévez got nothing more. Well done City.

Tévez is living hours away from his children and family. And he came into this game, just 24 hours after his 1 year old was rushed to hospital after her fingers became trapped in a door.

Rooney nearly lost his marriage due to his, how shall I put it, nocturnal habits. Let’s just say, he brought it on himself.

      So that settles that argument.

And who are you to suggest Craig Bellamy should be in prison. Until you are qualified to make that judgement, I don’t think it’s wise for you to say anything.

And finally, if you’re saying Rooney has had a better season that Silva, you’re more deluded than I thought you were.

    • Bring Bellamy back 14/02/2011 at 12:46 am #

Footballers arent saint’s but Craig has had certain debilitating problems but one of these is not child molestation thankfilly.
I did not say they were unplayable. Note i used the word nearly unplayable. Hence Switzerland nad Inter’s success last year. Carlos’s daughter has just been in an accident recently in which her fingers were severly damaged and she was just undergoing surgery just before the game. He was asked if he felt he was mentally able to play and so he did. I think this part of the reason for his subdued nature.
Dont rate Milner hence BRING BELLAMY BACK.

      • Bring Bellamy back 14/02/2011 at 12:55 am #

        Thank you for your support.

  19. Bring Bellamy back 14/02/2011 at 12:58 am #

Thank you for the support. They are both great players but genuinely ,unbiasly i think Tev should be given the benefit of the doubt.

  20. Kaptain Kompany 14/02/2011 at 3:40 am #

Richards needs to play every single game. I don’t care if it’s at right back or center back, but we need him in there. And give the captaincy to him or Kompany

  21. Ricky 14/02/2011 at 9:17 am #

Amman, on your point on possession, Mr Summerbee may well have been correct. Different companies use different methods of procuring a figure for possession.

Quite an interesting article, worth a read.

Oh, and finally, get off your high horse, take off your rose-tinted glases and just try, for once to see things on a level playing field.

    • Ricky 14/02/2011 at 10:00 pm #

Actually, I have come to my senses ….. The article doesn’t mention United so it’s probably not worthwile reading

  22. mattbw7 14/02/2011 at 2:51 pm #

For the bitter slagging Nani off, what a way to show yourself up, he’s the best winger in the league this year, two footed can head, yes he has the falling over thing too much but its getting less and less, ie he’s maturing. Wouldnt swap him for any of Ciddys lot and that includes Silva who I rate.

    • Bring Bellamy back 14/02/2011 at 6:29 pm #

You would rather Nani than the graceful hard working David Silva? Are you kidding me? Silva is part of a great generation of Spanish footballers and has been a revelation at city. He now keeps our attacking play ticking. We have got into the bad habit of relying on certain players and without Silva we would largely be toothless. And that united fan was talking about what does Nani have to do to be recognised “score a screamer against chelsea”. Well i seem to remember Silva doing exactly that for the Valencia in the champions league.

  23. JOHN GUIDETTI IS MY HERO!!! 14/02/2011 at 8:27 pm #

To put it bluntly, Amman is a bitter red who now realises that City are on a level playing field with United.
